Our workplaces today have such a broad age range in their employee base. There are currently five generations. They are:

  • Generation Z: born between 2001 and 2020
  • Millennials: born between 1981 and 2000
  • Generation X: born between 1965 and 1980
  • Baby Boomers: born between 1946 and 1964
  • Silent Generation: born between 1925 and 1945

I am a member of Generation X, and I will readily admit that I had negative interactions with members of the other generations. I would sometimes blame the conflict on the mindset of those generations. For example, older generation members needed to handle change, and the younger generation needed to pay their dues. Fortunately, because I am self-aware, those conflicts were few and far between.

We can all learn from one another, but all generational members must have open minds.
